Background of the Study
Poliomyelitis (polio) is a viral disease that can cause paralysis and even death. Nigeria was declared polio-free in 2020 after decades of immunization campaigns and health policy interventions. However, surveillance and vaccination efforts must continue to prevent re-emergence, particularly in states with low immunization coverage.
Benue State has played a crucial role in Nigeria’s polio eradication efforts through routine immunization programs, community outreach initiatives, and collaboration with global health organizations. Understanding the impact of these policies on polio eradication in Benue State is essential for sustaining progress and preventing future outbreaks.
Statement of the Problem
While Nigeria has been declared polio-free, the threat of resurgence remains due to gaps in vaccination coverage and public health infrastructure. Some areas in Benue State still struggle with vaccine hesitancy, inadequate healthcare access, and logistical challenges in immunization campaigns. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted routine immunization programs, potentially affecting polio control efforts.
This study seeks to investigate the impact of health policies on polio eradication in Benue State, identifying key successes, challenges, and recommendations for sustaining progress.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of health policies on polio eradication in Benue State.
To identify challenges affecting polio vaccination and surveillance efforts.
To recommend strategies for sustaining polio eradication in Benue State.
Research Questions
How have health policies contributed to polio eradication in Benue State?
What challenges affect the implementation of polio vaccination and surveillance programs?
What strategies can ensure the sustainability of polio eradication efforts in Benue State?
Research Hypotheses
Health policies have significantly contributed to polio eradication in Benue State.
Vaccine hesitancy and inadequate healthcare access hinder the success of polio control programs.
Strengthened immunization campaigns and public health education will sustain polio eradication efforts.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the impact of health policies on polio eradication efforts in Benue State, analyzing vaccination coverage, surveillance measures, and public health interventions. Limitations may include incomplete immunization records and difficulties in accessing remote communities.
